Acclaimed stylist Mike Adler is proud to have been appointed to the judging panel of the Real Leather. Stay Different. International Student Design Competition. Here he tells us what this means to him, and what he will be looking for.
I am honoured to be on the judging panel of the upcoming Real Leather. Stay Different. International Student Design Competition. It is an incredible platform for participants to launch their names within the international design community. The featured cover shoot in Rollercoaster magazine and partner collaborations with Wonderland, Arts Thread and Chooserealleather.com is an invaluable opportunity to convert their ideas and branding into produced garments with global promotion and invaluable industry mentoring and support.
Today, the fashion industry’s environmental impact is a global conversation—as ethical and sustainable textiles, design, manufacturing, production and consumption take priority. Whether developing a new brand or expanding or joining another, I’m looking for these ideals to be translated in each competition entry. Designs should be innovative in areas of sustainable sourcing, textiles, natural tanning, construction and manufacturing, with a clear identity of the design’s target market.
Classic, modern design should show well thought out and respected boundaries—clean lines, wearable, durable and smart design for today’s modern, savvy buyer. Avant guard looks should see boundaries pushed—architectural, sculptural, textural, dramatic, immaculate pieces for an astute, selective and discerning customer. The Louis Vuitton brand is a good example of how to develop great leather design within a larger brand directive and varied customer base. Each product is symmetrically aligned with all other assets in the brand – ready to wear, accessories, homeware and furniture. A complete design structure works successfully for the brand values, innovation and the end customer.
I will be thrilled to see what the next generation of designers has in store for us.
Xx mike
