Leather coats are everywhere for autumn/winter 2024 – and beyond

Leather coats are everywhere for autumn/winter 2024

It’s officially leather jacket season, and outerwear is getting an XXL makeover this year. That means coats, trenches and voluminous puffers. And, while bombers and blazers are certainly holding their place, the full-length leather coat has undoubtedly re-entered the Matrix (Neo style) for AW24.

Speaking of which, it was Gabriela Hearst who showed shoulder-to-ankle overcoats with sharp shoulders and lapels – while Ludovic de Saint Sernin erred on the side of slouchy with its eyelet-embellished trench coats. At Khaite, things were kept even sleeker with oversized silhouettes in supple merlot and black leathers, and models at Coach walked the runway in more leather trenches – this time ‘70s-inspired with classic epaulette details.

We also saw ‘balloon’ coats at Bottega, olive green maxi jackets at Gucci, power puffers at Jil Sander and structured oxblood designs at Hermès – so if you’re considering an investment piece of outerwear to wrap up in this winter, the leather coat is a savvy choice. From high end to high street, ahead are this season’s highlights.

L to R: Gucci, Khaite, Mango

Gucci green leather coat, £6,700

Straight from the runway in one of Gucci’s varying greens of the season (the brand calls this one ‘military green’, FYI), you can’t deny the effortless silhouette of this full-length number. Statement without falling into the OTT category, it features oversized pocket details and a matching martingale to the back – plus a subtle Gucci logo on one lapel. The brand has stated that it aims to use 100% traceable and chrome-free leather by 2025.

Mango oversized leather coat, £399

Over on the high street, Mango’s 100% leather pieces have sleek, elegant lines that read much more luxe than their humbler price tags. This oversized design – in colour-of-the-season burgundy – is elevated with a shirt-style collar and buckled strip cuffs.

Khaite leather wrap coat, £7,010

Leather was a core theme throughout Khaite’s AW24 collection, and its oxblood wrap coats were undoubtedly a highlight – sized-up on the models for an extra oversized fit. Made from supple lamb’s leather, wearers can cinch in some shape using the wraparound belt, or go buttoned-up and boxy just like the catwalk. Since burgundy is one of this winter’s hit shades, expect rich leather tones like these cropping up everywhere.

L to R: All Saints, COS

AllSaints ‘Aire’ long line leather coat, £499

AllSaints is well known for its leather bikers and bombers, but the brand’s new ‘Aire’ coat is in fact a longer-line version of its beloved ‘Corrina’ blazer – with a single-breasted silhouette and classic slim-fitting sleeves. Made from ultra-soft and LWG-approved sheep leather, it’s an easy classic with ‘90s vibes.

Cos leather moto coat, £699

The moto trend shows no sign of waning, with the likes of Miu Miu and Prada championing biker boots for Autumn/Winter ‘24 – so it’s no surprise the high street is following suit, too. Cos’ take uses classic distressed seam details and nearly-hidden zip pockets, with a knee-length silhouette that gives the racing look an update.
