Meet Todd Sutherland, acclaimed still life photographer and Real Leather’s latest guest editor

Todd Sutherland has been shooting still life in the industry for over 15 years. His portfolio boasts an array of luxury clientele from cars, fashion accessories, jewellery and much more. We are excited to welcome him as our next contributing editor. Meet Todd…

When we asked Todd Sutherland what his passion in life was, well we weren’t surprised by his answer……

“Still life of course! Be it in photography or art. To take the intricate design and detail of any object and transform it into an image which not only pays respect to its true form but goes one step further by provoking the viewer to see it in a whole new light….well that provides me with endless fascination and pleasure.”

From his first beginnings in Sydney Australia photographing for prestigious publications such as Vogue and GQ and prominent Advertising campaigns nation-wide…….. it was only a natural progression to head across the seas to the UK.

London now his home-town has seen Todd’s secret passion for luxury items come to the fore – shooting for some of the world’s most prominent producers of luxury goods in jewellery and timepieces, cars, homewares and interiors. But whether shooting in the studio or out on location, one thing he has observed is the continued use of leather. Aniline, patent, pressed, stamped. Colours, density and texture – there are no limits he says as to where one can find leather.

“It’s in the shoes, in the handbags, the watch straps, hats, gloves, luggage, jackets, furniture, car interiors that I photograph daily”…… And the more crafted and luxurious a product he says…the greater chance the use of leather will be involved.

 “The tactility, and in time, the patina of leather cannot be substituted – it is simply a beautiful natural product”

Todd’s hopes for the future:

“A return to buying once. To see buying quality become the new fashion. And definitely to see an end to the obsession with throw-away fast fashion – it’s unsustainable and we need to return to using products which are in harmony with the natural world.”
