Trainers may still be top of the shoe trends in 2024, but sunshine is on the horizon (hopefully) – so it’s officially acceptable to shop for sandal season, we reckon.

Judging by the spring/summer 2024 runways, there’s a handful of styles that are set to dominate our feet this year – from the fashion flip flop to elevated toe posts and even the ever-enduring dad sandal, which lives to survive another season. Of course, chic leatherwork is the core theme of our round-up, from woven techniques at Bottega Veneta to metallic shine at René Caovilla. Ahead, the best leather sandals to shop for 2024…

The ‘toe ring’ sandal

Toe post sandals aren’t exactly new, but 2024’s update sees a nod to a Y2K phenomenon – the toe ring. That’s right, one of this year’s trending sandal styles will see metallic accents added to the, er, big toe – as seen on the Tory Burch spring/summer 2024 runway – to give the look of chic jewellery. Expect to see these popping up everywhere; Mango and Jeffrey Campbell are already on board with their own iterations, or Emme Parsons offers a more luxe statement. For a kooky twist, Bottega’s new ‘Adam’ sandals feature a golden apple adorning the toe post – which will no doubt spark plenty of other designs.

The luxe flip flop

Thanks to The Row, our continued fondness for the humble flip flop shows no sign of waning – though this season’s versions are even simpler than before, harking back to a certain rubber slip-on that truly screams holiday (but make it fashion, of course). Chanel, Proenza Schouler and Ferragamo all showed simple thong sandals at their recent shows – get the dainty look with Ancient Greek Sandals’ versions, or Staud’s simple slides

The occasion-wear sandal

Who says flat sandals are only for casualwear? Since nonchalant dressing is perennially chic – and dress codes are only becoming more relaxed – occasion-appropriate sandals are firmly a wardrobe staple for 2024. The flat heel keeps the look grounded, but elevated details keep things smart – think Aquazzura’s ‘Cala di Volpe’ sandals, or René Caovilla’s ‘Cleo’ wrap-arounds. A welcome tool for dressing down a wedding guest outfit that just feels a tiny bit try-hard.

The updated ‘dad’ sandal

It seems the celebrated dad sandal is still going nowhere – Chanel continues to launch new designs, including an updated backless silhouette and some sweet candy shades. Practically every other design house have their own versions, too, including Bottega Veneta, which offers its knotted leather ‘Jack’ design in on-trend burgundy.

The caged sandal

The fisherman sandal has decidedly gone on the back-burner over the past few seasons after its grand renaissance back in 2022 – but since they were reintroduced on the SS24 runway by Loewe, they’ve peaked interest once again. Joined by JW Anderson, who also showed embossed fisherman flats on the runway, Gabriela Hearst and The Row also continue to dominate the market with their own styles – Tod’s also offer an extra-chunky pair, in supple suede.
