With the recent London BAFTA’s event presented virtually, celebrities dressed for a live online audience as virtual host and subsequent live video effects controlled the award ceremony. Also in August, MTV built multiple stages throughout New York for their MTV Video Music Awards as celebrity performances were live fed around the globe—I couldn’t help but reminisce of the Costume Institute MET Gala and how this pandemic may shape its future within our new world fashion industry.
Since 1973, the worlds ultra A-list and notable newcomers have attended the highly coveted Costume Institute Charity fundraiser more commonly known as the MET Gala—fashioned by Vogue Magazines Anna Wintour post 1995 its reach is among the largest global audience for any event of its kind. The changing annual theme provides unparalleled opportunity to designer and stylist, with a limitless mentality it has showcased some of the worlds very best and most extravagant fashions—creating some of the most Iconic celebrity dressing moments in history.
Ruffles, crystals, sequins, boning, feathers — from the most iconic pairing of Gianni Versace and Donatella in their namesake label at the 1996 MET Gala, leather has made some striking appearances on its red carpet! Actresses and notable designers of The Row Mark Kate and Ashley’s Olsen’s full leather ensembles dominated the 2019 headlines as did the full pink leather Moschino Barbie doll presentation worn by Kacey Musgraves.
In continuing my series, I present my edit of absolute Leather Loves—from the amazing years of the Costume Institute’s red carpet for you to discover or relive and enjoy!
