Leather on the Red Carpet

Awards season is back – and so is the red carpet with plenty of leather to lust after.

For the last two years, lacklustre virtual ceremonies, delayed dates and time-delayed speeches have failed to replace the pre-pandemic conventions of awards gatherings.

But now the full horror of in-person cringe-worthy acceptances has returned and some shocking instant comedy reviewing courtesy of Will Smith. But on the upside, evening gowns and tuxedos are firmly back on our fashion radar.

This season, leather has found its way into the A-list bashes despite not often being the sartorial choice for such dressy events.

Leather coats, suits and dresses from the high-end fashion houses brushed shoulders with sumptuous silks and luxurious lace, proving yet again that it’s a fabric full of versatility.

And the stars who pulled off the leather looks are just some of the hottest around right now.

Take a look at our gallery of the best-dressed celebrities this awards season.

Little Simz

Hordes of famous faces descended on London’s O2 Arena for The Brit Awards in early February, but the talk of the town was Little Simz.

The 28 year-old rapper, and winner of Best New Artist gong, wowed the crowds in her Matrix-inspired Prada leather coat.

The long-line number was perfectly aged for a more lived-in feel as the star gave her outfit a pop of colour with a lime green shirt.

She changed into a grey wool coat, white shirt, tie and trousers for the ceremony, all expertly cinched at the waist with a leather belt.

She stole the hearts of the nation with her inspiring ‘thank you’ speech and took her mum on stage with her.

Little Simz is certainly big news in the style stakes and one to watch.

Anne Marie

Before performing at The Brit Awards, 30-year-old Anne-Marie took to the red carpet in top-to-toe black.

Channelling the nineties style of skimpy tops and low-slung bottoms, the singer smartened her outfit with a boxy leather jacket by Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini.

The wide shoulders and zip fastening were the perfect shape for this cool, minimal aesthetic.

Amy Forsyth

Star of The Gilded Age, Amy Forsyth proved that opera gloves are going nowhere.

As the 26-year-old took to the blue carpet at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in March, all eyes were on her show-stopping leather gloves.

Mixing textures expertly, her feminine white feathered gown by Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini was perfectly accompanied by super long black gloves – and we can’t get enough!

Timothee Chalamet

After daring to head down the Oscars red carpet shirtless, Dune actor Timothee Chalamet, 26,  turned into a leather clad Adonis for the Vanity Fair after-party.

His matching co-ord of black leather and denim jacket and trousers with stompy boots further cemented his position as a style icon.

Julia Fox

Never one to shy away from the headlines, Julia Fox had us gripped with her ensemble at the Vanity Fair party.

The Uncut Gems star, 32, chose a figure-skimming leather dress by Han Kjobenhavn complete with sculptural hand around her neck.

Worn with gloves, a bag made of actual human hair and her signature thick eyeliner, Julia proves she’s certainly not afraid of fashion.

Christina Aguilera

As she is the OG of leather chaps, we were thrilled to see Christina Aguilera back in leather trews for the Billboard Women in Music Awards in LA this March – although this time without the cut-out crotch.

The 41-year-old opted for an Alberta Ferretti shiny leather suit with a body chain underneath and voluminous hair leaving us desperate for more Xtina in our lives.
