The best leather clutch bags for weddings

A trusty clutch bag is an essential in the art of wedding guest dressing

By Fiona Ward

A trusty clutch bag is an essential in the art of wedding guest dressing – but ‘the one’ can be hard to find. For special occasions, ideally you want an accessory that’s small enough to be convenient but big enough for all your essentials, and that matches the vibe of your outfit, of course.

Generally, I find a neutral or a metallic to be the most adaptable of shades when it comes to clutch bags – especially for wedding season, when you require something that works for any manner of dress codes. Raffia is an undoubtedly lovely choice for summer, but a leather clutch bag is an accessory for all seasons. Bonus points if it comes with a crossbody strap to free up your hands on the dance floor.

Happily, 2024 has seen a resurgence of clutch bags in many shapes and sizes, from soft, supple pouches that can be hugged under the arm (see Miu Miu and Loewe) to envelope clutches (Bottega Veneta) and box clutches (Gabriela Hearst). Suitably inspired? Here’s my top five leather clutch bags on the market right now, for a variety of budgets…

Toteme T-Lock Clutch, £820

The cult-yet-quiet Toteme T-Lock bags count Kate Holmes and numerous fashion influencers as superfans – and despite only launching in 2023, have reached if-you-know-you-know bag status. Now available in a smaller clutch size (with an attachable strap), the T-lock is suitably roomy while remaining compact. An ideal choice if you prefer to carry your clutch under your arm.

Hunting Season Clutch Bag, £420

If Toteme is your vibe but not your price point, New York-based brand Hunting Season might be just the ticket. Made using supple neutral leathers and contrast stitching, these bags give the same low-key luxe energy at a more mid-luxury bracket. The dark brown colourway is ideal for teaming with neutral outfits.

DeMellier Vancouver Clutch, £365

The top-handle clutch bag is having something of a moment thanks to Bottega Veneta’s cult ‘Andiamo’ design. A slimline wallet clutch becomes instantly more carry-able with a handle – and DeMellier’s offering also has a chain strap for extra ease. Made using only Leather Working Group-approved leathers.

Cult Gaia ‘Nala’ Clutch, £400

For summer weddings abound, Cult Gaia is the go-to for beachy designs inspired by nature. The ‘Nala’ bag is fan-like and fun, but still classic enough to match up to most wedding guest looks – and is available in gold or silver metallic leathers.

Bottega Veneta Knot Clutch, £2,950

These days, Bottega Veneta’s cult bags are almost countless, but one of the house’s enduring modern greats is undoubtedly the Knot bag – which was launched by previous creative director Tomas Maier back in 2002. It’s still one of the most recognisable box clutches on the market, and a trusty wardrobe staple to add to any evening look. Today, Matthieu Blazy’s versions have a slightly softer silhouette and a folded, more organic intreccio pattern.

Sézane Carmen Pouch, £180

If raffia bags take your fancy this season, consider a version that’s reinforced with leather for longevity – which is where Sézane’s Carmen clutch comes in. Roomy in size, this woven number is ideal for laidback occasions, and comes in three super-summery shades.
