INTERVIEW WITH PEI
Tell us about the inspiration behind your project:
My project Gestation drew inspiration from the experiences and processes of pregnancy. It pays homage to my mother and women everywhere. The power that women show during the course of pregnancy is legendary and I wanted to express my respect for the strength and forcefulness they display during this process.
The shape of the garment is inspired by magical sculptural imagery of women during pregnancy holding their stomachs. I chose to primarily centre the colour palette of the garment around sunset themed colours due to their warmth and how that connects to the warmth and comfort of pregnancy.
How has this competition influenced your view of working with leather in future?
Based on this remarkable experience, I am definitely more inspired to continue working with leather. I plan to continue to research and experiment more with leather garments and designs. My next goal is to design and create a bag using leather which is an exciting possibility!
How do you think winning this competition will impact your career as a designer?
In my opinion, winning this competition will help me to become more widely known in the fashion industry which will hopefully push me to continue building my design identity and experiment more with leather and fashion.
What are your thoughts on leather and sustainability, and how do you think leather can adapt to a fashion industry increasingly focused on sustainability?
One of the most important aspects with leather sustainability is the material’s durability as this promise of a quality and long-lasting piece of clothing is something consumers can cherish. A great leather product can be used for many years and last a lifetime, making it sustainably viable.
