The competition, organised by LHCA in partnership with Taiwan International Leather Association (TILA), has attracted 540 entries from students from 34 Taiwan universities. The students have grabbed the chance to show off their talents and to fulfil the brief of ‘unique, compelling designs that promote the use of leather now and in the future’. There are four design categories: Apparel, Bags, Footwear and Accessories.
All designs had to feature US hide and leather as the principal material.
The judging team of five, which consists of Taiwanese designers, media and fashion stars, has shortlisted 20 designs to enter the competition’s final stage. The impressive line-up of judges includes world-renowned womenswear designer Mao Tsen Chang, of MAOMAO.STUDIO, and Miquel Rey, co-founder of LLagut. “Leather designs this year are even more fascinating,” says Mao Tsen Chang who is the returning judge from last year, “Many ideas have used leather in very creative ways, and we look forward to their real products.”
The talented 20 shortlisted designers now have until July 9th to make samples of their designs. Winners will be honoured at an awards ceremony hosted by LHCA and TILA in Taipei. Attendees, including entrants, students and local media, will be able to see examples of the best of the competition.
Competition winners will receive cash awards sponsored by TILA and local sponsors. The overall winner will also feature in Rollacoaster Magazine’s A/W issue and in the RLSD coffee table book, sponsored by LHCA.
