A family business established in 1989 by Tim Bent, Bentleys antique leather shop is a collection of beautiful objects reminiscent of a museum. Unlike a museum, everything is for sale, and we’ll be featuring one of these objects each month. You can read more about Bentleys here.
This month, Tim tells us about a wonderfully aged leather trunk that dates back to about 1910.
This splendid leather trunk by makers R.W. Forsyth of Glasgow and Edinburgh has solid brass fittings and still has the original interior lining.
The faded initials C.G.O.M. can be made out on the ends of the trunk and the brass lock plate is hand engraved, Knock Castle. Largs. The castle is situated on the west coast of Ayrshire, Scotland with views over the Firth of Clyde, close to the town of Largs.
This trunk was made to last with the corners and handles over 15mm thick and made of five thicknesses of cowhide. Not surprisingly the trunk weighs 20Kg so it is perhaps more suitable these days as a coffee table than a piece of luggage.
Forsyth was one of the leading department stores in Scotland and their luggage was excellent quality, sturdy and of traditional construction.
