East-West handbags are everywhere this season - here’s our pick of the best
First came the return of the bowling bag. Now, its extra-elongated cousin, the East-West handbag, is making a comeback, too.

Identified by its narrow, rectangular shape, some might describe the East-West bag as a clutch bag with straps. The style is reminiscent of a similar 1950s silhouette, though it’s most likely the styles of the 90s and noughties that are being referenced today. Back then, the shape was thought to have been inspired by the Fendi baguette bags made famous by Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City, which feature a similar oblong shape.
In 2000, Chanel introduced its East-West ‘chocolate bar’ bag, named for its rectangular shape and signature quilted leather – which looks like squares of chocolate. By 2004, even the Birkin bag had been reimagined in an East West silhouette by then-Creative Director Jean Paul Gaultier (a style which has now been reintroduced for Spring/Summer 2025). Both bags are highly collectable vintage pieces today.
Today’s East-West handbags undoubtedly have 2025-coded updates, such as suede fabrications and sturdy, almost architectural straps. Alaia’s popular Le Teckel bag is arguably one of the most notable examples, available in soft nubuck with a sleek, slim body. Other versions are roomier, such as Coach’s iteration or Khaite’s. And, inevitably, the trend has trickled down to the high street.
Below, our picks of this season’s best East-West bags…
Probably the poster child of this year’s East-West bag renaissance, the Le Teckel has been seen on all the it-girls – from Rosie Huntington Whiteley to Margot Robbie. Adorably, the name translates to ‘daschund’ in French, in celebration of its long-bodied shape. Available in a variety of leather finishes, the brand was clearly confident in its cult status from the get-go.
We’d be far from surprised if Chanel relaunched the collectable East-West chocolate bar bag. It ceased production in 2011, allowing the Classic Flap to become the house’s hero, but vintage lovers have always appreciated its elegant shape. Once a more affordable way to own Chanel, these have sadly already shot up in price – but keep an eye on the resale sites for a bargain.
The East-West bag trend has also influenced slightly roomier tote-style bags, including this suede style from Massimo Dutti. In 2025’s go-to shade, chocolate brown, it’s a wearable winner.
Those looking for a more affordable alternative to the Le Teckel will love this East-West bag from Korean accessories brand Osoi. Available in a number of shades and finishes including patent leather and soft nubuck, the straps and shape are almost uncanny.
Made in Leather Working Group-certified leather, Reformation’s Elena bag is another more practical option, crafted with a high-shine finish and a distinctly noughties shape. Also available in another of this year’s ‘it’ colours, butter yellow.
