A family business established in 1989 by Tim Bent, Bentleys antique leather shop is a collection of beautiful objects reminiscent of a museum. Unlike a museum, everything is for sale, and we feature one of these objects each month. You can read more about Bentleys here.

This month, Tim tells us about an amazing piece of military hardware—a two handled cordite carrier from around 1915.

“These were made to carry a charge of cordite which was placed directly into the chamber of a cannon. They provided the propulsion for a missile. I’d seen a film of them being used on HMS Belfast and it’s pretty extraordinary!

“Because they were naval, they were very well cared for and the patina they develop is amazing. The metal fittings are made of non-ferrous metals to make sure there could be no spark which would have been disastrous!

“They make a perfect umbrella stand in peace-time.”
