Is leather more sustainable than manmade alternatives?
Amid all the confusion about how to calculate the sustainability of different materials, we need to put the record straight: Leather is more sustainable than manmade alternatives.
Camper decides against vegan products and gives a lifetime warranty for leather shoes.
In a recent interview with Fashionutd.uk Leticia Sandoval Godinez, Camper’s sustainability manager, said: “We are not completely convinced by the current alternatives to leather. When we started thinking about vegan alternatives, we realised that most of them are made of plastic. That didn’t seem like the right solution for us.”
Because of this, the company has announced that it will not be producing vegan shoes. Natural materials lead the way at the Spanish shoe company. Ms Godinez said: “We source wool certified by the Responsible Wool Standard and work with Leather Working Group tanneries to achieve better traceability of all our leathers.”
Leather is also much easier to repair than vegan alternatives, which inspired Camper to launch its new service—a lifetime warranty. It now promises to repair new pairs of the classic Pelotas design for ever. The service is free for the first repair and the company promises to carry it out within 24 hours.
Camper was founded in 1975 by Spanish businessman Lorenzo Fluxà. It recently signed a finance deal with BBVA to be used to further improve its sustainability.
