Nothing evokes luxury like the scent of leather. From the fragrance of the hide upholstery in a Bentley to the enveloping aroma of a Chesterfield settee, leather’s smell, as much as its look and feel, is essential to its enduring appeal.

So it is little wonder that many colognes and perfumes aim to capture it and sell it to the masses!

The recreation of that familiar fragrance is not as simple as liquefying a loafer, or juicing a jacket. The sought-after scent is usually replicated with birch tar or with a complex combination of ingredients including patchouli, black tea and tobacco.

The first recorded leather perfume was commissioned by King George III in the 18th century. He was so taken with the smell of his gloves he commissioned Creed, a perfume house that survives to this day, to recreate it in a cologne.

To celebrate leather’s luxurious sensual assault, we’ve selected five different fragrances that capture its full olfactory range, from the newest, lightest suede to the most lived-in leather.

  1. Dunhill Signature Collection British Leather is a suite of four men’s fragrances created to represent the very foundations of this British brand. The leather base scents recall the company’s long history of artisanship and give a sublime contrast to the top notes of violet leaf and bergamot. Dunhill commissioned perfume maestro Pierre Negrin to create the collection and it could be one of his finest yet.

  1. Chanel Cuir De Russie, for women, is said to have been created after Coco Chanel’s encounter with the Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich, grandson of Tsar Alexander II. The scent of his birch tar tanned leather boots inspired her to commission the perfume. First released in 1927, Cuir De Rusie ranks with Chanel’s classic fragrances. The leather is complemented by blonde tobacco notes – the two combine to make a solid base for the jasmine highlight. As Coco advises, apply it “wherever you would like to be kissed.”

  1. Jo Malone London Bronze Wood and Leather is a bold cologne for men. The leather scent arrives fashionably late to the party, following grapefruit and juniper top notes and the sturdier scent of bronze wood. When it kicks in, the leather combines with vetiver root to produce a perfectly rounded base that lingers luxuriously.

  1. Luxury French Fashion house Alaia uses a subtle hint of hide in its signature Eau De Parfum. Created by perfumer Marie Salamagne the perfume features a bouquet of peonies, freesias, roses and violets bedded in a base of leather. It’s a winning combination; it has just been awarded a top rate of five stars in scent bible Perfumes: The Guide.

  1. DS & Durga’s Amber Kiso is a complex, unisex scent that presents some of the heaviest elements with the lightest of touches. Leather provides the supporting act for incense, cypress, patchouli and iris. Inspired by the smell of Hinoki wood in Japan, the leather notes in Amber Kiso are used to evoke the fragrance of Samurai amour.
